Most of the difficulty here is not the booking flow — it is everything that happens when a supplier is slow, a payment half-succeeds, a policy is written in a unit nobody documented, or a customer is standing at a bus stop at eleven at night with a ticket that does not scan. The interesting problems are about money, state and other people’s APIs, and almost all of them are about being correct when something else has already gone wrong.

It is a small team, so the work is broad. Nobody here owns only one layer, and the person who wrote a feature is usually the person who fields the support mail about it.

• People who write down why, not just what. Read almost any file in this product and you will find the reasoning next to the code, including the things that were tried and abandoned. That is the house style and it is not optional.
• A bias towards saying “we do not know” over producing a confident wrong answer — particularly where somebody’s money is involved.
• Comfort with other people’s undocumented systems, and the patience to be defensive about them rather than annoyed by them.
• Care about the customer at the worst moment of their trip, not the best one. Anyone can design the confirmation screen.

Tell us what you would want to work on and show us one thing you have built or fixed, with the reasoning behind a decision you made in it. A short, specific note beats a long CV; we will ask for the CV if we need it.

If you have used the site, the most useful thing you can include is something you think is wrong with it.
