Cancellations and refunds
How to cancel, how the charge is decided, and when the money reaches you. Every figure here is the one the cancel screen and our emails use.

How to cancel
One screen, and it tells you the cost before it asks you to confirm.
- Open My Bookings and choose the booking. If you booked as a guest, use the link in your confirmation email.
- Choose Cancel. For a bus, where the operator permits it you can cancel individual passengers rather than the whole ticket; where they do not, the booking goes as one.
- Read the three lines the screen puts in front of you: what you paid, what the cancellation will cost, and what should come back.
- Confirm. From here the request is with the operator and cannot be withdrawn.
If a booking cannot be cancelled here, the screen says so and gives the operator’s reason in their own words rather than hiding the button. A coach that has already departed and a fare inside its no-cancellation window are both answers, not faults.
How the charge is worked out
By the operator's policy as it stood when you booked — not by us, and not by whatever the policy says today.
The cancellation terms are captured and frozen onto your booking at the moment the seats or the room are held, and that frozen copy is the only thing the quote is calculated from. A policy the operator publishes later does not reach back into a booking you have already paid for.
Most policies are banded by how close to departure or check-in you cancel, and the narrowest band that applies is the one that bites. Cancelling eight hours before a departure that has a “within 12 hours” band and a “within 24 hours” band is charged at the 12-hour rate.
Where the policy is ambiguous, we quote the more expensive reading. A refund that arrives larger than quoted is a good surprise; one that arrives smaller is a justified complaint.
Where we cannot work it out, we say so rather than guess. If the operator published no policy, or stated a charge in a unit we cannot read with certainty, the screen shows their own wording and tells you the figure is unknown. A wrong number in front of an irreversible button is worse than no number.
The operator’s final figure is the one that counts. Where it differs from the estimate, our email shows you both.
What happens after you confirm
Five stages, and you are emailed at each one — with a text alongside it where we hold a mobile number for the booking. You do not need to chase us in between.
- You confirm the cancellationThe cancel screen shows what you paid, what the operator will charge and what should come back, before you commit to anything.
- We send it to the operatorYou are emailed to say the request is with them, carrying the expected refund and a request reference. This is not yet a confirmation.
- The operator answersAccepted, and the booking is cancelled and the final figure fixed — we write again, showing both figures if they differ from the estimate. Refused, and the booking stays active and we say why.
- The refund is sentIt goes back to the account you paid from, with a refund reference in the email. Nothing is required from you.
- The refund settlesA final message when the payment provider and your bank have both settled it. That closes the booking.
If the operator has not given a final answer within 24 hours, the cancellation stops sitting quietly as “processing”: it is escalated on our side and you are told that it is being chased. Nothing waits indefinitely without you hearing about it.
When the money arrives
5–7 working days, to the account you paid from.
Refunds are returned to the original payment method — the card, UPI handle, bank account or wallet the booking was paid with. We cannot send a refund somewhere else, and we will never ask you for bank details in order to process one.
The clock starts when the operator settles the cancellation, not when you asked for it, and the last leg of it belongs to the payment provider and your bank. Card refunds in particular can show on your statement a few days after the bank has released them.
If it has not arrived after that window, quote the refund reference from our email to your bank first — they can trace it directly. If that gets you nowhere, send us the same reference at support@bookmyyaan.com.
Common questions
Do you charge your own cancellation fee?
The charge shown on the cancel screen is the one that will be applied to your booking. Where a convenience or service fee is not returned, it is named on that screen before you confirm — you will not find a deduction afterwards that was not shown to you first.
I missed the bus. Can I get a refund?
No. A no-show is not a cancellation, and once a service has departed there is nothing to cancel. If you know in advance you will not make it, cancel before departure — even a heavily charged cancellation usually returns more than a no-show, which returns nothing.
The operator cancelled the service. What happens?
You should not be out of pocket for a service that was not run. Tell us at support@bookmyyaan.com with your booking reference and we will take it up with the operator on your behalf.
Can I cancel one passenger out of a booking?
For a bus, where the operator allows partial cancellation — the cancel screen offers it per passenger when they do. Hotel bookings are cancelled as a whole stay.
My booking says it is in review. Is my money safe?
Yes. That state means the payment is recorded against the booking and the booking did not complete — it exists precisely so that money is never left unaccounted for. A refund is due and you will be emailed about it. Do not rebook against the same payment in the meantime.
My fare was non-refundable. Is there anything to be done?
Usually not: a fare sold as non-refundable is priced on that basis and the operator keeps it. It is still worth cancelling so the seat is released, and worth telling us if the circumstances were exceptional — we can ask, though we cannot promise the answer.
The binding version
This page explains the policy. The contractual text is section 7 of our terms of service, read alongside the fare rules and supplier conditions you accepted at checkout. Where this page and those disagree, those govern — tell us, because it means this page needs fixing.
